The Problem

Deaf users get startled by fast-moving objects in public because they don't hear them coming. We worked with a cochlear implant user to co-design a prototype.

The Idea

A subtle, wearable device that alerts the user of incoming objects in public.

Iterative Design

Through an iterative process of sketching, rapid prototyping, user feedback and testing, the design was iterated on and refined multiple times.

Design for Assembly

The internal structure of the product was carefully designed to house the necessary electronic components. Snap fits were used to ensure the product was easy to assemble.

Grab & Go Mechanism

An intuitive clip-on mechanism to easily attach the device to clothes, bags and chairs. The design focuses on looking like a cute accessory or speaker, avoiding a design that feels sterile or related to healthcare.

The Details

The final design mimics the design of Sony's brand language, blending together geometric shapes with gentle curves.
